Homeowners and landlords with federally backed mortgages may defer payments for up to a year with no added interest, late fees, or penalties. The National Consumer Law Center has a guide (click HERE) for property owners to see if their homes or buildings are federally backed or insured. The federal government offers the best possible terms for mortgage forbearance. Banks offer their own forbearance plans. However, these often have terms that are less helpful for borrowers.
